The windshield washer pump was not working on my 2005 Hyundai Accent so I decided to investigate. When I went to disconnect the electrical connector to the pump, the entire pump motor and relay assembly came out of the plastic enclosure and was all rusted out–so it definitely was a bad pump. Follow along to learn how easy it is for you to replace your Hyundai Accent’s windshield washer pump.
How to Replace Windshield Washer Pump on 1999-2005 Hyundai Accent
Equipment:
Tools Needed
- 10mm socket – get that socket and about all the other wrenches you need in a Stanley 99-Piece Socket Set
- Engine Fluid Catch Pan (for catching the washer fluid when you remove the pump and it all drains out)
Parts Needed
Step 1: Pop the hood.
Pull the hood release lever, which is left of the steering wheel by the driver’s left knee:
Slide the hood safety latch to the left and lift the hood:
put the hood brace in place:
Step 2: Remove the passenger side headlight fixture bolts.
There are two 10-mm head bolts holding the headlight in place:
Step 3: Disconnect the main head lamp electrical connector.
The main lamp electrical connector does not have any clips holding it on and pulls straight off as shown below:
Step 4: Dislodge the headlamp from its location and disconnect the other two electrical connectors.
Work the headlamp assembly straight out of its seated location, being aware that there are still two electrical connectors attached to it:
Depress the tab on the outside electrical connector and carefully remove it. You may need to wiggle the connector to get it to release:
Remove the inside electrical connector from the headlamp assembly:
Set the headlight aside where it will not get damaged.
Step 5: Unsnap the windshield washer pump from the side of the washer fluid tank.
The windshield washer pump is located on the outside of the windshield washer fluid tank. It is simply snapped onto the side of the tank and you should just pull it straight off to remove it. If there is any windshield washer fluid in your tank it will empty out on the ground so you should put a pan underneath your vehicle to catch it.
Step 6: Disconnect the electrical connector from the top of the pump.
There is a tab that must be depressed before you can remove the connector.
At first when I went to pull the connector off the top and the entire insides came out of the pump because the top seal was completely gone. Everything inside was rusted and that was why the pump wasn’t working anymore–the seal on the cheap plastic case of the pump had failed and water had gotten inside.
Step 7: Transfer the hoses from the old pump to the new pump.
One of the hoses runs to the front windshield and the other runs to the hatchback so you don’t want to get them switched. I transferred one at a time, making sure to not get them mixed up. The rubber hoses can be pretty easily pulled off by hand. Here’s the new pump:
Step 8: Snap the new washer fluid pump back onto the washer fluid tank.
The large port on the pump goes straight into the tank. I forgot to take a picture of this step but it’s pretty simple and the pump easily snaps on.
Step 9: Reinstall the two outside electrical connectors to the headlight.
Refer to Step 4 for this.
Step 10: Reinstall the headlight into the car.
You may need to work it back and forth a bit to get it into place and get the holes to line up.
Step 11: Reinstall the main headlight electrical connector onto the headlamp assembly.
Refer to Step 3.
Step 12: Reinstall the two mounting bolts onto the headlamp assembly.
Refer to Step 2.

They tried a universal pump which caused both front and back wiper to go no matter which switch was pressed. So I took it out, ordered the Genuine Hyundai 98510-25100 Windshield Washer Motor and Pump Assembly that it required. Just want to make sure only the front works with the front lever activated and the rear when button is pressed not both going no matter which one I try to use…
I had someone cut the original harness off, I bought the hyundai part to replace it but not sure which wires go where as the replacement has all black ones. Please help
If it’s a diaphragm pump it’s may not matter which way you connect the wires. I’d contact the part manufacturer to verify.
My thanks also John. My wife’s Accent washer pump failed, and as a decidedly non-mechanical person your instructions were clear and complete. A very short amount of labour later and all is well. Thanks from Australia.
What a fantastic tutorial. I bought one of these yesterday and the window washer isn’t working, no noise of the pump going so I assumed it needed replacing. A google of where the pump is located threw up your page, and BINGO. I can now order a pump and fit it easily. Many thanks for putting this together.
Thanks for the feedback. It’s a pretty easy repair so you shouldn’t have a problem.
