I decided to time how long it took me to upgrade my iPad 3 from iOS 8 to 8.0.2…

How Long Does it Take to Upgrade iPad 3 From iOS 8 to 8.0.2?

The answer is below.

Hardware:

Step 1: Download the iOS 8.0.2 update.

It is a 1.85 GB file and took about 15 minutes to download on our business internet connection.

Step 2: Sync your iPad.

Syncing it will back it up too.

One thing I’ve run into on both my iPad and my iPhone now is the situation where iTunes reports to you that the “Other” category of files is taking up all your space:

Other file category taking up ALL the space

The Other category really isn’t taking up all the space, this is an error–if you sync it will display correctly.  I had this same problem on my iPhone and it was resolved by syncing it with iTunes.

Step 3: Update to 8.0.2.

Click the update button and wait….

Answer: 14 minutes and 55 seconds.

It took me 14 minutes 55 seconds to update from iOS 8.0 to 8.0.2

I’ve been wearing a Timex Ironman Triathlon for the past 10 years–you can get one too, here.

One thing that I’d note is that both times, when I updated my iPhone 5 and my iPad 3, I got the following error when the iOS device came back up after updating:

Error message: iTunes could not connect to this iPad.  The session ID is missing.

The error above did not cause a problem though.  I simple disconnected the sync cable and reconnected it and iTunes saw the device correctly.
