I ordered a new stereo for our 2004 Toyota Sienna because the original one would shut off when you were trying to switch modes or adjust the fade.  On long trips you just grow to rely on being able to pop in a DVD for the kids!  I ordered a replacement on ebay.  One problem with the replacement that I noticed right away was that the door on the cassette player wasn’t staying shut like it should.  A spring should hold it closed but this one would just swing open and shut.  I’m kind of picky and wanted it to work the way it should so I tore into it.

Hardware:

Tools Needed:

Step 1: Remove the stereo from the van.

If you want to do this to the stereo that is installed in your van you’ll first want to remove it.  I cover how to replace the stereo in a 2004-2010 Toyota Sienna in my blog post below, which includes removing it of course:

Step 2: Remove the black plastic face of the stereo.

Use a phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws on either side of the face of the stereo that need to be removed.  Here’s what they look like on the right side:

After you have removed the 4 screws you will need to look around the edge of the black plastic and pry up the tabs that latch the black plastic face onto the metal body of the stereo.  Start with one and gently put pressure pulling the stereo face off and work your way around the outside.  Gradually it will begin to come off.  This is what it will look like (on the back):

Step 3: Flip the one end of the door spring back in place.

what you are looking for is the top (hinge side) edge of the cassette door.  There is a spring that, if messed up, will look like this:

Using something like a pocket knife, carefully lift up the left end of the spring so it is on top:

When it is fixed, this is what it will look like:

The spring is now back in place

Now you have a cassette door that automatically closes again and doesn’t “hang” there loosely.  If you are a little obsessive compulsive like I am then you can relax a bit that everything works the way it should now 🙂
