We have never had cable but we were getting sick of using a VCR to record our favorite shows so I looked into the options of how we could DVR live broadcast television and not have any monthly fees.

Cutting the Cord–How to Use a DVR Without Cable and With No Monthly Fees

The first solution I came up with was the Channel Master CM-7000PAL Antenna-based DVR.  It was great for a couple years until Channel Master cut its support and you could not update the 7-day schedule anymore.  If you still own one I have a few blog postings on that model here:

I then switched over to a used Tivo Series 3 with a lifetime subscription built in.  You can find one on ebay here for under $300.  I picked the Tivo Series 3 because it is 720p HD and it has two antenna tuners so you can record two shows at a time.  It also is still (mostly) compatible with the iPhone and iPad apps that TiVo produces so if you lose your remote you can control your TiVo with your iOS device instead.  There are a few features you cannot use on the apps that they restrict to the latest TiVo models, mostly in regard to viewing extra information on the shows playing.  You can see the full schedule on your iPhone with the Series 3 though.  You also can program the TiVo Series 3 via the web.

All you need to do is use a splitter from your antenna and connect both coax cables to the two antenna-in ports on the back and connect the TiVo to your ethernet via Cat-5 cable and you are good to go.  There is a wireless adapter for the Tivo Series 3 if you can’t run ethernet cable to your TiVo.

I also upgraded my TiVo Series 3’s hard drive and documented it here:
