Program Channel Master CM-7000PAL DVR Remote to run Vizio TV

I recently upgraded to my first HDTV, a Vizio E320i-A0.  I upgraded from a 15-year-old Sony Sony Trinitron XBR.  When I went to program the Channel Master remote to run the Vizio I soon discovered that the Vizio Remote Control Device Code was not listed.  I don’t think Vizio even made a TV when the Channel Master CM-7000PAL was originally being manufactured.  After fumbling around with two remotes, the Vizio primarily for the volume only, I wondered if the Channel Master’s newest antenna DVR, the CM-7400 Channel Master TV’s remote (Channel Master CM-4513150 Remote Control) was backward compatible because it was capable of being programmed to run a Vizio.  Instead of buying one and finding out post-purchase, I called Channel Master tech support.  Officially, the CM-7000PAL remote does not support the Vizio but the tech was pretty sharp and knew that the CM-7000PAL was originally made by the Dish Network and so he looked up Dish’s code for the Vizio, which is 627.  There are also other Dish Network Vizio programming codes that they say to try.  I was able to get the same functionality out of 505, but none of the others work:

Dish Network Remote Programming Codes

Vizio’s remote programming page suggests these (see my notes next to each)

502 — did not work at all
627 — power, volume, mute, menu, select work
004 — did not work at all
113 — did not work at all
505 — did not work at all
011 — did not work at all
I was able to get most functionality out of my remote so read on to learn how to program yours…

Program Channel Master CM-7000PAL DVR Remote to run Vizio TV

Hardware:

  • Channel Master CM-7000PAL DVR
  • Channel Master CM-7000PAL DVR Remote Control Model 5.3 IR CM 4513140
  • Vizio E320i-A0 LED HDTV
    Part No. 10223480022
Channel Master 5.3 IR Remote Control

Step 1:  Turn on the Vizio TV.

You can do this either with the Vizio remote or on the set.

Step 2:  Put the TV button in programming mode.

Press and hold down the opaque “TV” button (top row, second from the left) on the Channel Master remote until all the (top row) Mode buttons light up (pal, TV, VCR, and AUX).  The TV button will then steadily flash.

Step 3: Enter the Vizio remote control device code.

Using the numerical pad enter: 627 (or 505) and then # (or you can try one of the other codes in the table above).  You must enter the remote 3-digit code before the TV button stopps flashing.  If it has stopped flashing go back to step 2.  After you press the # sign the TV button will then flash 3 times.  Wait for it to flash 3 times before you go to the next step.

Step 4: Press the red TV button once.

Your Vizio TV should shut off indicating the remote code is compatible with your TV.  If the TV turns off then you have at least a partial match (the power at least works and all of the codes I tried that worked the power button also worked volume and mute).  This red TV button will always turn on and off the Vizio now, regardless of the mode it’s in.  Done!
The Channel Master remote will not give you much control of the Vizio TV unfortunately, but at least it will let you turn it on and off and change the volume.

Here are the buttons that actually control the Vizio TV:

MENU: brings up the Vizio internet apps
MUTE: mutes volume
VOLUME: volume up/down
*: sleep timer
Numeric Keypad: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
Page Up/Down: Zoom Mode
One unfortunate thing to note is that when you open up the Vizio internet app menu (by pressing “MENU” on the Channel Master remote), the left/right/up/down buttons on the Channel Master remote do not work to control the Vizio TV.  The select button works but you can’t do anything but select the first selected internet app.Other Info:
